Oscar rolls out digital red carpet

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Nominees Jacki Weaver and Nicole Kidman have been encouraged to tweet.

Oscar organisers have unveiling their "you're invited" slogan for the upcoming show, detailed a web-friendly ceremony and invited the nominees and their mothers to tweet on Hollywood's night of nights.

Australian stars Geoffrey Rush, Nicole Kidman and Jacki Weaver were among 151 nominees that gathered at today's Oscar nominees luncheon - one of the most exclusive of the annual Academy Award gatherings - to hear producers Dan Jinks and Don Mischer explain how they want the world's top film honours to feel more inclusive to everyday moviegoers.

To make people feel they are "invited", Jinks and Mischer plan to show much of the program "through the eyes" of co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway.

The producers want the nominees to play a more active part in the show, talking to cameras behind the scenes that will be streamed live online.

They also want the "mominees" - mothers of the nominated stars - to appear on camera and share stories of the celebrities as real people.

The producers also urged the nominees and mominees to engage with the audience via social networking sites.

"The first thing they are going to be doing is tweeting," Jinks said.

"Now, some of your mums may not tweet... but we will teach them how to do that."

Jinks, Mischer and Tom Hanks, who appeared in a pre-taped video, admonished stars to make acceptance speeches lively and under 45 seconds rather than read from a list of "thank yous".

"We would really urge you to think about creating emotional and meaningful speeches. Those are the ones that work," Mischer said.

"Speak from the heart. Pulling out a list has just been proven over and over again to be quite boring."

The Academy Awards will be handed out at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood at the end of the month.
