INTERVIEW: SHARING THE MAGIC OF GUZAARISH WITH HRITHIK AND AISH

Friday, November 26, 2010

Since attending a special screening of the first look of Guzaarish, BollySpice has been captivated by the magic of this film. Devdas. Black. Saawariya. A Sanjay Leela Bhansali project arrives under the weight of expectation. That expectation is doubled when the film reunites Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with the box office ka hit formula that sparkled in Dhoom 2 and Jodha Akbar. We went head-to-head with the lead actors in London, to talk new cinema and old relationships, building a character, and why - though Guzaarish might be many things - it is not a 'masala'.

What was it like to work on a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production?

Hrithik: Mr Bhansali is just a creative genius. In fact, the first time when he came over to the house to narrate the script to me I was all ready to decline, because I thought I was yet not good enough to be part of his vision. But he took me through the narrative, and in five minutes he made me laugh, he made me cry, and I just heard myself blurt out the words 'I have to do this film. When do you want to start?' Working with him has been magical. It has been fantastic, it is infectious. It just makes you want to give your best, and if the best is not good enough he makes you want to do better, and he makes you not want to give up.

After Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas, this is now your third film with Bhansali. How was the experience on this occasion?

Aishwarya: I knew we would enjoy this experience from the word go, simply because of the way we approach our work. Sanjay is a very dear friend, a very special director in my life, and yes I agree that I am blessed to have got the opportunity to work with him again for the third time in my career. He is not dictatorial about his work. The atmosphere stems from passion. We love doing what we do, and I think that is what we all share in common. We are obsessively passionate about cinema and about finding that magical moment. That is what you are trying to bring into a scene, that magical spontaneity. Since we all have that in common it was easy to enjoy the process of working together, and co-incidentally, this is my third film with Hrithik and my third film with Sanjay. Individually, I have great working equations with them and I am glad we all came together. Each character has been so memorable and so special, and Sofia is certainly a beautiful character for me to have had the opportunity to essay.

Guzaarish marks the third time that you have worked as co-stars. Has anything changed in the way you collaborate on a project?

Hrithik: I think it is just the same as it was when we gave our first shot together years and years ago. That's what is beautiful about this equation, it has just maintained.

Aishwarya: We just pick it up and take it from where we left off. It's a new film, a new character, and a clean slate, and here we are onboard. We enjoy doing what we do, and I think this is what translates.

Was it difficult to play this particular character Hrithik?

Hrithik: Well, It is a very bright film. It is the happiest character I have played, because of the deep contrast of the backdrop of the intensity of the tragedy, which is why the laughter and the smiles carry much more meaning: to be able to smile while being in such a tragic situation. If you see the pictures, the banners, and the hoardings, you can see the contrast of life with all its problems, and the smiles that you have to conquer them with. That is what this film is about.

Aishwarya, your releases this year Raavan, Robot and Action Replayy seem to be experimenting with a range of different genres and characters...

Aishwarya: Actually, I have been doing this every year for the last couple of years where I have been trying to bring a different Aishwarya to my audiences with each release. Though it is not in our control, you aspire to do that when you have accepted your films for the year. Sometimes different things can unfold and schedules can change, but I am glad that it has been going to plan where I have been able to share a different character with each successive release. Having said that, it is what we as actors enjoy doing. This time it is so visibly obvious because the releases have come fairly close in succession. But this has been the pattern right since Devdas where there has been a different character each time. So here Hrithik is playing Ethan after Akbar which is a very different character to last time. Our audiences like this, and we as actors like to experience this also.

Hrithik: Monotony is something that kills passion. As artists it is our duty and mission to explore different aspects of character.

From the first look of the project, Guzaarish seems to contain a little bit of everything. Would you say this is a Bollywood 'masala' film?

Hrithik: I would not term it as a 'masala' film. What I would say is that it is some kind of wonderful. You will have a smile on your face and a tear in your eye. It is timeless

Aishwarya: It is a film that cannot be slotted. It is a beautiful slice of life and an experience.

Have your partners Susanne Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan seen the film?

Aishwarya: Not yet. Even we have not seen the final cut. Tomorrow is the night where we will all get to see it for the first time in Mumbai.

GUZAARISH HAS BEEN A GIFT TO ME - HRITHIK ROSHAN

just ask how he is today, and Hrithik Roshan, who stars in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, is "Still flying! My spirits are up because of all of the feedback. I am really happy!" Hrithik plays Ethan Mascarenhas, a quadriplegic, who spreads joy and happiness to his radio show's listeners and to all the people in his life. After fourteen years of being confined to a wheelchair, Ethan makes a choice and a guzaarish (request). To see what his request is, what his nurse Sofia (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) does and the answer to his request, you need to get to the theater now. His pride in the film and the fact that he feels blessed to have played this role is very evident when you talk with Hrithik. Throughout our chat his voice rang with conviction and went through joy, seriousness, happiness, excitement, and laughing. He talked about how Guzaarish has changed him, about what makes his chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan so great, and even about the scene that made him run away from the set. Hrithik's passion for his answers, for his role as Ethan and for his film made one of the most inspiring conversations I have ever had.

What were your first thoughts when you heard the script?

I remember the day when he [Bhansali] came over to the house and sat down, and in five minutes he took me through the concept of the film. It just took those five minutes, because within that little time he made me laugh and made me cry, and instinctively, my heart just blurted out the words, 'When do you want to start? I have to do this film. We have to make this film'. It was that powerful, just within even five minutes. The rest now is history.

What research did you have to do for your role as Ethan?

The most important, I would say weapon or ammunition, or the fuel for an actor is information. Of course, Mr. Bhansali, had done a lot of research himself, which he had taken and applied to his script. A lot of the work was already done within the world of the film. I started off meeting all the doctors first and then all the people who have been through a tragedy like this. All the quadriplegics that have become such good close friends of mine now - who I take care of and who take care of me in return; I don't know who takes more care of who (laughs). Through spending time with them, I really understood, and not just understood, but I learned so much, you know. It was a real gift in my life to have gone through this experience. To learn, to just understand the world around us, to understand us as human beings, to understand why we need to go through struggle and pain and suffering to finally come out to a beautiful and brighter place in life. To finally see the world for what it is, to rise above the physical realm and believe in more than what meets the eye. We attach so much to the physical realm with our egos and stuff like that. There is so much more to life, if you just rise above a little and have a little bit of that spirituality in your perspective it's a beautiful world. After this journey, all the little bickering, the irritations, the complaining, the egos being affected by somebody saying something about you; all that, it's just disappeared from my life. It has been a real gift to me and I think that is the gift that is within this film for the people. Hopefully, even if 3% or even 2% absorb that and apply that, I will consider myself successful and happy.

How difficult was it to play the scenes as a quadriplegic, where you only had your eyes and your voice? How did you get yourself into the place where you could not use your body language to get across his emotion?

First of all, honestly, I think any actor who is even a little sensitive and honest would have done as good or a better job than this, because once you look into the eyes of a man who has been through a journey like this, once you understand that story and go through that journey with him, it is impossible for you not to want to give your best. It is impossible for you not to rise above that level and emote what you have been through yourself, along with those stories. For me, Ethan is the not the work of a good actor. I was a medium to pass on a message, I think. That is the way I see it. It was somebody else's vision and it was the essence of the stories of all these people who have been through these tragedies. I think it is their blessings, you know. For some reason I was chosen for this, I just feel I was chosen, actually blessed. I feel really, really overwhelmed now and happy to see my parents proud of me, to see my actor friends come and congratulate me with such whole heartedness, which I have never seen in the industry. It's, you know, some kind of wonderful I truly believe that!

What surprised you most about working with Mr. Bhansali?

Actually, there were a lot of revelations about him that I was not aware of. He's an incredibly sensitive man. He's super-talented. The level of his passion is so high that it is infectious; you just imbibe it and want to give back your best. Sometimes even better than your best: you are going to do things you did not think you were capable of. He just doesn't give up. It's just such a courageous thing to do, even after an unsuccessful film, to still believe in your vision, to believe in your world and not get disillusioned. Not follow the crowd, but to stick by what you believe in, that is some kind of courage. There is something to learn in this experience and in the courage Mr. Bhansali has shown. To find out what you are about, that is pure genius. Aesthetically, he is incredible. If you ask me, it is completely a one-man show and the man is Mr. Bhansali, in all honesty. An actor is just a color in the painting. He chose me as one of the colors, but he is the man who envisioned it and he is the man who expressed it.

His films are like a painting; at least that is how I see them.

Yes, and you know it is so easy to add an item song to make the film run, but that is not what he is about. I don't know, I am at a loss for words. I just hope everyone understands what I am saying. It is incredible. I am just empowered, knowing that I had the experience to work with him.

What do you think you and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan bring out in each other as actors to make your movies together so good?

First of all, there is deep respect, and above that there is a very good friendship. If you don't like the people you are working with you are not going to be able to create anything of any worth. Of course, she is super-talented. Above all that though, what really comes through, from my perspective, is she is a selfless actor. I think as artists we all should be selfless. We should just give even if you are standing in a background in a corner. I think everyone in this cast gave. We all shared the same level of passion. Somewhere, I think, for Aishwarya, her approach to her art is very similar to mine and so we understand each other. It is so beautiful when I can ask for feedback or I can ask for suggestions or I can ask for help or even acknowledgment and vice versa. Between two artists, if you have that open ended communication, there is no way you are not going to create something beautiful. I think that is what translated eventually.

The hardest thing about playing this role?

Umm, I really can't segregate because as I said I feel I was just a medium (laughs). Ethan was somebody else; he came, he lived, he thought, and he left. I think through my journey with all the characters I have played I have always been inclined to doing characters I would look up to. From each character that I have played, I think I have imbibed in my own life the good qualities, which I saw in that character. With Ethan, I think it was not just imbibing, he just changed me as a person.

At the beginning it seemed the hardest, but eventually it became the easiest: I was never more comfortable with any other character more that I have been with Ethan. I really can't say whether any shot or anything was the most difficult. But, yeah, the most challenging one, the thing that scared me, was the climax speech. To end the film with a 10-minute dialog could be disastrous (laughs). I remember the day when we were shooting that scene and I arrived on the set. We had to begin, and I made an excuse and I ran away (laughs) - I went home! I did. I went home and I locked myself up in my bathroom and I said, I don't know how to do this. How am I going to graph this out? It is just too difficult. There is no way I can graph this out. So, then I decided okay, I am not going to do that, I am going to go there and just leap into it. Hopefully with the blessings of all these wonderful people I have met and, you know, just trust in something that is beyond my understanding, something good will eventually come through because I believe in this so much. The next day I went and just poured my heart out. It is commendable of Mr. Bhansali to write such a beautiful scene and to hold your attention for 10 minutes, it is his pure genius. Pure genius.

I love every note of the music of the film, which Mr. Bhansali wrote as well.

Ooh, the music of the film. I am a fan! I am a fan of Mr. Bhansali. Once you see the film it grows even more and then a bit more and then it just takes over. I don't think any other man in the world could have justified the music of the film as Mr. Bhansali has. He just knew it so well; he knew the emotions so well. The music of this film will stay with me for the rest of my life.

You said on Radio Zindagi that Guzaarish has changed how you see the world. What did you mean by that?

Well, in life we go through so many experiences, good and bad. What I learned from my experiences is that those chapters in your life where there is struggle, there is pain, there is loss, there is failure; those are actually your gifts. You have to have those chapters in your life then finally evolve above them and rise above. They eventually become the wind beneath your wings. That is something that I learned through this film, and it has changed my perception of the world. I think all your experiences are gifts, if you can just understand them and know that they are there to do some good for you. Every time you feel the aggression to change something that is not in your control, something that has happened because of a million moments that have aligned together in nature to create that one specific moment of whatever, devastation or tragedy, it is futile, it is unintelligent, it is foolish. What you have to do is find the strength to accept it and smile. Make it your friend and know that something good will come out of this. It is like that fly moment in the film. He can't shoo the fly away, he can't, he tries, and he can't. What does he do? What choice does he have? What choice do we have in our lives? You can't fight. When you can't fight make it your friend. He makes the fly his friend and he watches the TV with the fly. Life goes on and it is such a beautiful moment. That is something that I have learned again and it has changed me.

What does your fans support mean to you?

Right now I am just overwhelmed with the love that has been pouring in. It is my duty to just take enough to motivate me and encourage me for the next 20 years, the rest I have to deflect towards Mr. Bhansali and towards God. I actually want to say so much, but I think I can sum it all up in these two words: Thank you! I keep saying this but I have to say again and again, just thank you. Thank you for the love, for the feedback, for the support, for the encouragement, the motivation. Their feedback, positive or negative, is my access point to growth. How else am I going to get better? So please, even if the work is not good I would like to tell them to let me know, let me know, because I will accept it without any ego and I will try and promise to do better and hopefully give them entertainment for years to come, Hopefully through that I will deserve their love for years to come. I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart, really!

Manisha Koirala’s parents speak about her divorce

Manisha Koirala:
might not have thought that her hasty comment about wanting divorce would spread like a fire in the jungle and media, reporters, friends, family would chased her crazily to enquire about the truth. She had to pay a heavy price for her remark updated on Facebook. Now her parents are coming forward to clear the weather about her divorce.

Her mother Sushma Koirala charged the media for making the issue big out of nothing which actually was nothing than a normal squabble between a husband and a wife.

"There might have been some minor dispute between the two which is normal in a married life but it has not reached to that extent as reported by the media."

"Manisha is busy with her work and is in Goa currently to attend a film festival where she has become a judge. Everything will be fine as soon as she returns home in a few days. I haven't spoken her about the matter, but so far as I understand it is not serious," Sushma told over phone.

"It is not a big deal. I don't want to blame the media and say that it was totally false. I hope that things will move towards positive direction," she added.

It was also reported that Manisha after marriage spent most of the time at her parents’ place.

Manisha and Samrat’s marriage are hardly five months old and crack in their relationship is already in the limelight.

Katrina is half Barbie, half Sheila!

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Katrina Kaif now has a Barbie modelled on her. Last year, the actor was a part of the iconic doll’s 50th birthday celebrations, and the single piece Barbie, launched recently, will have replicas out on the shelves by next year. Katrina is visibly excited about being Barbie’s chosen one from Bollywood. For her, it’s a great way to connect with kids who form a large part of her audience, as Barbie has been an important part of every child’s growing years.

She says, “My six sisters and I shared a couple of dolls between us. We had our tea parties and our fights too. I remember one time, when my sister, the one who’s a year older than me, and I were tugging at a doll and ripped her arm off. That Barbie was never replaced. It remains one of my most poignant memories.”

TMKMeanwhile, Katrina is gearing up for the release of her next film, Farah Khan’s much-anticipated Tees Maar Khan (TMK). “These days, I’m being called Barbie and Sheila, half and half,” she laughs, referring to the sizzling song from the film, ‘Sheila ki jawaani…’. “Yes, I’ve worn a half-sari, but the song is not so much about clothes as it is about the attitude. That’s Farah’s strength,” she points out. It’s an item song featuring a struggling actor with big Bollywood dreams.

Did Sheila bring back any memories of her struggling days? “Nooo,” she chuckles. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek take on our item songs and Sheila is a naïve and not-too-clever girl. There was no emotional connect. But I had a blast shooting it and the train sequences.”

Rumours have it that she’s done a Chaiya chaiya… atop a train. “I didn’t,” she retorts. “But there are key visuals of the train and the climax was shot around it with me hanging out and Akshay (Kumar) supporting my weight. No, I wasn’t apprehensive because action scenes with Akshay are always safe. He’s experienced and careful and I trust him immensely. In fact, Akshay and I have had an amazing run at the box-office with films such as Namaste London (2007) and Singh Is Kingg (2008) and I hope it continues with TMK. It would be a great way to end the year!”

The Christmas release, however, has thrown Katrina’s holiday plans for a six. “I’ve made no plans since TMK opens on December 24 and I may be required to do a bit of work promoting it during the New Year too,” she reasons. “So Christmas will be here this year. May be one of my sisters will join me.”

Will she be seen on reality shows to promote the film; KBC, MasterChef, or Bigg Boss? “Maybe one or two, but we won’t overdo it. I have no idea which ones we’ll be on.”

There’s talk of a sequel? “It’s the current fad and Farah’s call,” she says. “I’d love to work with her again. But for now, the only sequel I’m doing is Dostana 2 and I’m really excited about it.” No Race 2? “No,” she clarifies. “Remember I was killed in a car crash at the end of Part 1? And since the follow-up has no ghost track, I really can’t make a spirited comeback.” Touché!

‘Break Ke Baad’ recovers production cost before release

Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Break Ke Baad’, which hits the screens Friday, has already recovered its production and marketing cost by selling satellite rights.

The total money invested in the film is Rs.18 crore. Co-produced by Kunal Kohli Productions and Reliance Big Pictures, the movie is releasing across 750 screens in India.

‘It’s true that ‘Break Ke Baad’ has already recovered its production cost including marketing costs. Being a hyped project, the digital rights (satellite, music and video) were sold at a lucrative price,’ said Priti Shahani of Reliance Big Pictures.

‘Break Ke Baad’ also had marketing tie ups with brands like Kit Kat and Close Up. The brands have spent close to Rs.2 crore on TV spends in prime slots for the movie.

Directed by debutant Danish Aslam, the romantic comedy about space in relationships, also stars Sharmila Tagore, Navin Nischol, Shahana Goswami and Lilette Dubey.

Katie Waissel: X Factor Contestant Shattered At Granny's Revelations

Katie Waissel, one of the probable winners of the reality show ‘X-factor’, is going through a critical family crisis these days. The root of all her plight goes back to her 81-year-old grandmother Sheila Vogel-Coupe, who has publicly admitted that she is a prostitute and is not ashamed of it.

The family is totally devastated by this awkward revelation by the oldest member. Sheila says that she loves to have sex and make men happy and so enjoys doing it as a prostitute and she is proud of it. The lady, who got married twice and got widowed twice, says that there is nothing to feel ashamed about it.

Katie’s sister Natalie was quoted saying that they were totally shocked on hearing this and they have disowned her. But, Sheila says that the family is over-reacting on such a simple issue and Katie’s mom and her daughter Diana has behaved very badly with her. She says that it is Diana, who wants her daughter Katie to win ‘X-Factor’ and is using the news to get some public sympathy for her daughter.

However, Sheila sounded very caring and loving towards her granddaughter Katie saying that she also wants her to win because Katie has inherited the singing talent from her.

Sheila has claimed sleeping with a guy as young as 23 years of age and also with a man of 66 years. She said that she started this profession two years back because she started feeling very lonely after the death of her husband Noel Coupe in 2004.

The lady says that men are satisfied with her service and for this she maintains her body by undergoing regular exercise under the guidance of her trainer. She said that her family’s behavior has hurt her very much as she expected an unconditional love and support from them.

Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan : Biography .....

Hrithik Roshan, just 3 years old as an actor, has already figures in Top 10 people of bollywood. It's not just good looks, a phenomenal debut Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai which overnight instant him to super stardom or 2003 biggest commercial and critical success Koi Mil Gaya. Hrithik Roshan has a stirring sincerity towards his work that sets him apart. The trade predicts he will be the next superstar after the powerful Khan's. He is the son of Rakesh Roshan. Has two thumbs on his right hand that are grown together. He is having a sister called Sunaina. He had married to 'Suzanne Khan' daughter of Sanjay Khan on 20 December 2000 who was his girl friend from long time. He can't handle money. His wife and parents are taking care of the financial details. Has been called the Indian Sylvester Stallone, Brad Pitt and Michael Jackson rolled into one person. The country wide hysteria following the release of his first film Kaho Naa Pyar Hai in 2000, is known as Hrithikmania and is unprecedented. The look of his muscular, chiselled body started a fitness boom in India. He often supports charities of various kinds and known as a perfectionist and control freak. He wanted to quit the film business altogether after his father Rakesh Roshan was shot at and wounded by hitmen sent by the Bollywood mafia, but changed his mind. He prepared for 2 years himself, extensively for his screen debut, taking acting, singing, dancing, fencing, riding etc. lessons. He also worked hard on his diction and physical appearance (strenuous workout routines). Fought hard to overcome a stammering problem. Worked for many years on the sets of his father Rakesh Roshan in various functions, including sweeping the floor and serving tea to the stars, to learn the business from scratch. Believes in the good in every person, a character trait often misinterpreted by others as gullibility and/or naﶥty. He got 30000 (!) marriage proposals on Valentine's day 2000. He was the victim of a defamation campaign in late december 2000. Rumors were spread that he stated in an interview that he hates Nepal and its people. This immediately led to riots in Nepal, cinemas showing his films were attacked, posters burnt, Hindi movies banned in general for some days and several people shot dead by the police. The events made headlines all over the world and the governments of Indian and Nepal got involved as well. Anti Indian / Hrithik sentiment died down quickly when it became clear that the alleged statements were a fabrication and the rumors were spread by a malicious third party, possibly the Bollywood mafia, still pissed about not getting the foreign rights to Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000). Nepal born actress Manisha Koirala played an important role in getting the news to the people in Nepal that the accusations were false. In January 2001 Hrithik Roshan was again involved in a controversy. This time about a poster created and used by the Democratic Alliance in South Africa in November 2000 to woo Indian voters. The poster used his face without permission. The ANC reacted angrily and threatened to ban his films. He has been called the first complete Bollywood actor who has no weakness and scores very high in every department: face, physique, voice, dancing, drama, romance, action, comedy, macho, softie...

Amish Patel : Biography .....

Amisha whenever she hit's a low, she bounced back with one major hit that saved her the blues. Be it Gadar or then Humraaz. Now she is reapeating this in the form of historical The Rising a Ketan Mehta and Aamir Khan's projects. Amisha Patel was born on 19th June 1979 in Mumbai. For studies she went to abroad. Determination has been one of her strengths. Even when she was in Standard IV, Amisha was sure that she wanted to be the head girl of the school. When she told her mother about it, she laughed it off. Amisha worked towards her goal by improving upon her academic record and by the time she reached Standard XII, she became one. While doing Economics in the United States, Amisha kept herself busy teaching classical dance in her free time. She did join a financial company but a regular nine to five job couldn't hold her for long. She joined Satyadev Dubey's theatre group and started doing plays after convincing her parents a process that took a year. Armed with a foreign degree and an ultra respectable family background Amisha Patel was to be the CEO of the family business. Fate have something to do with her. Director Rakesh Roshan had already signed Kareena Kapoor opposite his son and had even started shooting with her. When that association did not work out Roshan remembered his fascination with his school friend Amit Patel's limpid-eyed daughter at a sangeet celebration. Rakesh Roshan even remarked that if he ever made a film with his son he would take her as a heroine. And this way she got her debut film Kaho Naa Pyar Hai. After that she had given other hits also like Gadar, Humraaz. In 2003 she had a Parwane which was a flop. Amisha Patel believe what is in destiny no one can take away from you. Aishwarya Rai : Biography

Aishwarya RaiAishwarya Rai was born in the South indian state of Karnataka in Manglore on 1st Nov 1973. She was younger of the two siblings, her brother being 3 years elder. When she was about 4 years old, her family moved to Bombay permanently. Her father worked as a merchant navy officer. Aishwarya did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir, Santacruz. Academically, she did very well and earned her position as the head girl of her school. Ash chose the science stream while at DG Ruparel College, her favorite subject being Zoology. Aishwarya wanted to do medicine, but circumstances didn't let her. Instead she chose Architecture and passed the interview at Raheja College with flying colors. By this time, Aishwarya had started getting modelling assignments. She then decided to take a break from architecture and concentrate on modelling. This green-blue eyed beauty stole ads for many prestigious firms, the ones which brought her into the limelight were the garden sari and the pepsi ad. Crowned Miss femina '94 runner up, she was a hot favorite to win the miss world title, which she did ! Her beauty and charm made her India's darling. She bagged Filmfare Award for best actress for her performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) as Ajay Devgan's wife who is in love with another man. She also won rave reviews for her performance as a rape victim in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000). In 2003 she bagged another filmfare award for best actress for the role of paro, she portrays in film Devdas. She had a well publicised affair with Salman Khan which lasted 2 years. Apparently his endless tantrums traumatized her enough to give a press conference in spring 2003 where she declared that she would never work with him again for personal reasons. In April 2003, she suffered an accident on the sets of Khakee (2003). She broke a bone in one foot and suffered severe cuts. The incident rekindled the discussion about poor safety standards on Bollywood film sets. Aishwarya's bagged a parallel role opposite 'Meryl Streep' in French director 'Coline Serreau's' Chaos. 2003 has been her annus mirabilis. On the jury at Cannes, the international festival circuit with Chokher Bali, the crossover sets of Bride And Prejudice, the cover of Time magazine. And now she's all set to waltz into Hollywood. International Stardom Devdas, in which Aishwarya joined Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and aishwarya_rai_162Madhuri Dixit, was a huge hit, lavishly produced as it was. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Rai was becoming an international star rather than simply a Bollywood one. In 2003, Rai was a member of the jury at Cannes. In 2004, she was chosen by TIME Magazine's Asian Edition as one of Asia's "100 Most Influential People." Rai was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2, 2005 - "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World." A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, and on April 25, 2005, she was featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. A wax figure of Rai is on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum.

aishwarya_rai_166Although frequently the subject of gossip column speculation about an imminent Hollywood career, it was only in 2004 that Rai finally acted in a foreign film. British director Gurinder Chadha hired her to play the heroine in Bride and Prejudice, a Hollywood-funded but Bollywood-ized version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice. The movie did well at the box office and Aishwarya's Hollywood profile rose a notch.

Rai is now said to be signed for another Hollywood movie, Rolland Joffe's project Singularity. She will star opposite Brendan Fraser.

She is in the cast for The Last Legion co-starring Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley.

She recently (summer of 2005) completed filming on director Jagmohan Mundhra's film Provoked. She is co-starring with Nandita Das. The film was shot mainly in Britain.
