Lions sack Fevola

Sunday, February 20, 2011

The Brisbane Lions have officially terminated the contract of troubled star Brendan Fevola.

The club said the decision was made by the Lions' board at a special meeting on Sunday afternoon.

It has been reported the AFL informed the Lions they could spread the remainder of Fevola's lucrative pay-out over two years if he was sacked so to avoid breaching the salary cap.

A statement by the club said the call to axe the 30-year-old Fevola, currently receiving treatment for alcohol and gambling issues, was based on medical advice.

"The decision to terminate Brendan's contract was reached by the Board of the Lions at a special meeting conducted this afternoon, having taken into account the views of the club's administration and football departments, as well as the need to protect and uphold the culture and reputation of the club," the statement said.

"The grounds for termination were that Brendan had engaged in serious or wilful misconduct through persistent breaches of his obligations as a player to the club.

"The club has therefore lost confidence in his ability to meet his obligations as a player due to these persistent breaches.

"The timing of this decision was based on medical advice. Brendan was informed of the decision this evening."

Fevola was recruited by the Lions from Carlton at the end of 2009 after a long history of off-field incidents.

Injury and further controversies plagued his short stint at the Lions, coming to a head when he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in Brisbane on New Year's Day.
